Another post-project modification

This is another re-work of a previous project. I originally knit this sweater back on 2006 just after we moved from southern California to northern Virginia. I used Elizabeth Zimmermann’s EPS yoke sweater and some Knit Picks alpaca adding a little bit of fancier stitch work right above the yoke decreases and for the hems. I added some short rows to the back to prevent what she calls DRU (dreaded ride up= when one’s sweater rides up in the back) which is something I seem prone to. I also gave it a crew neck adding some short rows to the back of the neck.

While I am still experimenting with flattering body shapes, I’ve known for a long time that crew necks are not flattering to me. I look awkward in basic t-shirts and usually try to get something that is a little looser and without much structure even for athletic clothes. I imagine that my initial choices with this sweater were these: First, I thought that I might want to keep the back of my neck warm more than I wanted the more flattering neckline. Second, that the drape of the alpaca might be problematic one a sweater with a very wide neckline. And finally, since I find EZ’s designs fascinating, I probably wanted to knit the “whole thing” rather than just stop.

What I found was that I rarely wore the sweater because it was too frumpy. I turns out that I would rather have a cold neck (or wear a scarf). The good news that I had knit it from the bottom up. So one morning four years later, I ravelled back to where it looked promising and did a simple crochet cast-off. This is the result:
aster front
aster back
I’ve worn it a couple times now. While its a bit on the FlashDance side, I prefer the new collar.

And, yikes! I’m going to do some serious work on my posture!
