Long time ago, I wrote a post about trying to figure out what colors I looked good in. And, having sorted that through that somewhat, I’ve been trying to figure out what clothing shapes are good for my figure. Let’s face it, most of us can’t just throw on anything and look good. IMO looking good has less to do with your essential shape, than knowing what to wear. This why my middle sister is inevitably better dressed than me. She has style and sass, while I have confusion and shy.
The summer before last, I knit a Liesel out of handspun and experiment with negative ease (the pattern is here). I wasn’t really happy with how it looked on me. It was too small, and too short. But, I only had about 10 yards of yarn left. I actually wore it a couple of times. I love the colors and knobby texture. But, I knew it wasn’t right.

Recently, I realized that I’ve been buying shirts that are A-line or empire waist. The idea being to hide my poochy stomach. But, they seem to make me look fat or pregnant instead. I think the problem is that while I don’t have the world’s smallest boobs, they’re pretty small especially relative to my rear. The A-lines and empires just flare out emphasizing my abundant bum and hips. The good news is the despite all that plus two kids, I have a waist. I’m thinking I should go for fitted at the waist, and try to simulate more curves than I actually have.
So, I cut the buttons off the Liesel, and sewed the fronts together leaving gaps at top and bottom. I still think its a bit small.

If I had it to do over (and I would if I had more yarn), I would make the neckline wider, add an inch of ease and make it several inches longer. I would also make it as a pullover (or false cardigan as it is now) until the lower edge. What do you think? Improvement? (Also, I am a bit heavier is in the second photo.)

I think negative ease works best in a closed circle. A pullover, rather than a cardigan, in other words. That way it can lovingly follow the lines of your figure.
I also think you're right to emphasize your waist. Be proud that you still have one, especially after two kids!
A fitted shell out of that yarn would be very nice, and you could wear an unbuttoned shirt over it to "ease into" your new style (sorry for the pun heehee).
I agree about the neckline; you might want to have it scoop a bit lower as well as make it wider.
Happy Holidays to you and yours ~

It is more flattering to your waist now but I think it deemphasizes your bust whereas the first style says "Check out my perky boobs after breastfeeding two babies. Suck it, gravity!"
